CAMP FEST 2024 

Group Camp @ Chicot State Park 

Friday afternoon, March 1 -- Sunday noon, March 3, 2024 

A weekend of socializing with friends, hiking & learning new skills!

We have presentations, gear displays, navigation hands-on training, campfires, canoe trip, and a guided tour of the Louisiana State Arboretum. Saturday night dinner is furnished by the club. Menu: pulled pork, baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, and dinner rolls. Sunday we will have coffee and pancake breakfast furnished by the club.  Members are responsible for dinner on Friday, and breakfast and lunch on Saturday.  Please plan for food/beverages requiring refrigeration, as space is not available for personal items in the Group Camp kitchen.  Please bring soda, adult drinks if desired, a coffee cup, and a reusable water bottle.

The price also includes male and female dormitories with bunk beds and showers or primitive campsites. Please make sure to make your choice during registration.  

​

RV's must reserve a spot in the improved campsites at your expense. The south campground has 82 available sites, and you can put a maximum of 3 tents per site. Seniors get a 50% discount on the park camping fees, not on the $6 transaction fee. Members attending Campfest should not have to pay the entrance fee, let the ranger know you are with the Louisiana Hiking Club.

THINGS TO REMEMBER   

​

  • Kitchen access is limited to kitchen crew volunteers.  

  • Walk-in registration and/or membership renewal ($10) is welcome, but please bring CASH or check! 

  • State Park policy requires pets to be always on a leash (no longer than 6 feet). No pets in buildings.  

  • Chicot State Park prohibits tents, hammocks, and RVs of any size at the Group Camp area.  

  • USED GEAR SALE!! Please pre-label gear with your name, contact information and asking price.

WORKSHOP INFORMATION 

MAP and COMPASS  Class  Instructor: Dale Mathews  

MATERIALS you will need to BRING : Compass (preferably an Orienteering Compass. You can find these a most outdoor stores from $20- $30) 

Description : This workshop will include the basics of using a Map & Compass in the outdoors with practice exercises.

Illustrated Journaling for Hikers   Instructor :  Carroll Mathews 

MATERIALS you may wish to BRING :  

1. Mechanical pencil and eraser 

2. Waterproof ink pen(s) such as Staedtler Pigment Liner, Pigma Micron Archival Ink, available at Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, Mo’s …and there are also some waterproof pens at Walmart on the Crafts Aisle. Size 02 and 05 are especially useful. 

3. Small Drawing or Watercolor sketchbook, for note taking and experimentation  

Description : Workshop will include samples of journals, how-to suggestions, a demonstration, an opportunity to experiment with light-weight, transportable media... and an assignment!
